The Donut King, Cambridge, NY Street Food

Street Food is alive and well in Cambridge, NY.
Every Saturday and Sunday, James King (pilot and donut maker extraordinaire) sells out of his hot handmade donuts, including apple beignets, plum-filled beauties, twists, and simple glazed.

As for donuts: I had my first Krispy Kreme just a few years ago. I have several friends who are Krispy addicts. Quite frankly, I don’t get it — too much sugar and not enough substance. I do love a good hot beignet from Cafe du Monde, where my parents used to take my siblings and me on Sunday afternoons. And I recently tasted a bacon-topped maple apple donut in San Francisco.

At King’s Donuts in Cambridge, NY, it’s hard not to fall in love with James and his sweet mother, Sally, who bake up the donuts hot and fresh in their kitchen just a few feet from the truck. They then hand the confections off to King’s wife, the-very-lovely-but-camera-shy Jana, who sells them from the maroon-colored Donut Wagon.
What I love about these donuts is that, although fried, there is not a trace of grease anywhere, which means they are fried in fresh oil at the perfect temperature. James made a special treat for us one day–true pastry cream-filled shells with a sweet chocolate glaze. I also got to play with the jelly injector and now want one, of course, for my own jelly donut injecting pleasure.

Come early to see the Donut King because hungry cyclists gather before and after their rides.

You make them sound just as delicious and delectable as they are.
How wonderful it was to share these with you, and to see you speak and interact and share with the James and his family.
Washington County misses you Kim!

Not for long they don’t. I see a Donut King adventure coming soon as she is headed our way again this month.
Seems that two tasty donut day experiences are not enough, we may have to make this a monthly pilgrimage! Plus, Kim and I have conspired on snagging a few unfilled pillowy beauties and pumping them up with crème fraîche and homemade blueberry preserves!
Oh joy to me for her return, for I have gone a month without pancetta and cream, poached peaches, and blueberry soup!
Ahhh….la belle vie!

These delicacies look mighty tempting. Savory’s more my thing though. (I’m with you on the Krispy Kreme mystique) I’d rather sit down to a flawlessly cooked couple of sunny-side-up eggs from the chickens at American Masala Farm in Hebron.

“Skip” and his family do make excellent donuts and have been there for some time. Next time in Cambridge, in addition to Skip’s donuts, check out the Common Ground Cafe, where they make everything from scratch and grow most of their own product including the grains for their breads.

[...] am not the first to rave about the King. Suvir and Kim have both written love letters to the little pastries. We got to have a quick tour of their kitchen and I was impressed at how [...]
